Clothes Sorting: Join us from the comfort of your home or office! Collect gently used clothes (NO stains or rips), sort by season, size, and gender. Label bags of sorted clothes. Our Closet will distribute sorted clothes to communities in need of clean clothes. Deliver sorted clothes to Beth Am Israel, 1301 Hagys Ford Rd Penn Valley, on MLK Day 1/16/23 9am-1pm, or we’ll make alternate drop off accommodations.

Electronics Recycling: Bring anything with a cord to ECYCLE! E-cycling collected by PAR RECYCLE WORKS – a local nonprofit that sells and donates reusable materials from electronic devices to support reintegrating formerly incarcerated men and women into the work force. Make a positive difference in our community by recycling your old electronics- anything with a plug See www.par-recycleworks.org for more details. Donate your unwanted electronic devices during our Annual Interfaith Martin Luther King Day of Service  Some items require a disposal fee as follows: Older CRT Monitors and TVs: $40 – $80/each, cost varies by size; Flat Screen TVs: $25; Computer Monitors: $7; Air Conditioners, Dehumidifiers, & Air Purifiers: $25; Microwaves: $15. Please bring cash or check for these items made out to PAR Recycleworks. An Electronics Collection bin will be available 24/7 (outside) the week before MLK Day for those unable to participate on MLK Day 1/16.

Serve from Home: Pack Food Baskets for Newly Arriving Refugees!  Welcome Newly Arriving Families! Collecting for Centro de Apoyo Comunitario . Purchase items from list below, make a welcome card (in English or Spanish, examples will be provided in both languages), package requested items in a paper bag or box. Food packages can be donated on MLK Day to 1301 Hagys Ford Rd, Penn Valley 9am-1pm, or we’ll make alternate arrangements.

What is needed: (please note amount and exact food item request, items easy to find at H Mart or Aldis)

  • Canola Oil – 1-1.5 liters
  • Rice – long grain white (not instant or Uncle Bens) – 3-5lb bag
  • Beans – Black or Pinto dried beans in bag – 1-2lb bag
  • Tortilla (Maseca) Flour – (can be found at Aldi’s, H-Mart, Amazon) – 1-2lb bag
  • Sugar (white) – 2lb bag
  • Instant Coffee (please make sure it is INSTANT that is what is preferred culturally)
  • Canned Evaporated or shelf stable milk

  2. Choosing between food or education: what food insecurity on college campuses looks like today. 10:15am-11:15am. Register here.
    Nazun, a national leadership development organization focused on equipping the next generation to fight food insecurity on college campuses, wants you to know that 39% of four year students experience food insecurity every year they’re in school. Join CEO Rebecca Bar to learn more about who today’s college students are, what they are experiencing, and what you can do to help, alongside the 60+ campus and community chapters nationwide. Rebecca will share a bit about the history of Nazun (formerly Challah for Hunger), as well as ways you can get involved in this pervasive and stigmatizing issue on today’s campuses across the US.   3. Countering climate mis/disinformation in conversations and in the media. 10:30am-12pm. Register here.
    We will focus on how to respond to wrong climate statements 1) in conversations when we hear misinformation from our families and colleagues and 2) climate disinformation from the media. We will be discussing ideas from communications experts and practicing appropriate responses, If you have heard such zingers please come prepared to share them with us and we will discuss how to address them.
