We spoke to Natasha and Omer Taffet about their favorite Jewish activities, their connection to Jewish community, and the ways jkidphilly has impacted their family.
What do you enjoy about jkidphilly?
My family and I get a great deal out of the story times and music classes that have been organized through jkidphilly. I also recently enjoyed a “Moms Night Out” with great conversation and even better company.
What kind of Jewish activities do you enjoy at home?
We celebrate Shabbat every Friday as a family, and most enjoy reading PJ Library books at bedtime. We do listen to pop Israeli music as my husband is Israeli. What are your favorite PJ Library books?
Some of our favorite PJ Library books are “Something from Nothing”, which my 5-year-old son enjoys the most. He loves the idea of making an old object new again, and how there are 2 generations are in one household.
The others are “Koala Challah”, something both the children could relate to as they often struggle with being too small or young for certain activities. However being able to contribute through baking resonates with them as their father is a Chef/Baker at our little bakery in town. Finally, the Shalom book is a favorite, as my son can read it aloud.
Are you part of any other organized Jewish communities?
We were previously members of Rodoph Shalom, which we loved and were married in. However we’re looking for a synagogue that is in walking distance of us in Center City, so that it’s more accessible with two small children.
What do you think other parents should know about jkidphilly?
jkidphilly has been a place where my children and I can join with our community, in our community to remain present in our journey through Jewish life.
Being a convert when marrying their father, I have often felt that my discovery and experience of Jewish life has been at the same rate as my children. We are wide eyed and excited to not only continue to learn but most importantly continue to be apart of a community that welcomes you with open arms and consideration.
I have connected with neighbors through the organized events (organized by Parent Ambassador Lettie Switzer) and have felt closer and more connected and known in my community, a feeling that I have never felt in the place that I live. At such events you meet other families who are navigating raising families and careers all while trying to instill Jewish values in their children.
