Gratitude: Make It Normal, Special & Real

On Sunday afternoon, I taught a class to a group of 8th graders that covered, among other topics, the importance of community, why we perform acts of gimilut chasidim (lovingkindness), and the fact that you are more likely to get in a car accident than you are to get Ebola. Then, driving home from the class, I was in a car accident (thereby hopefully reducing my already infinitesimally small chances of getting Ebola to zero).

My own, personal connection started with the Abramson Center for Jewish Life when, in the mid-90’s I began going to the Philadelphia Geriatric Center (the former Abramson located next to Einstein Hospital) monthly to celebrate Shabbat.  This mitzvah was something that I looked forward to, and continued for six years before leaving for college.  Now, as a parent, it is amazing to give my son the same experiences that I cherished.

It All Starts With A Table

It all starts with a table.  In this case, the table is long and oval shaped.  It has two leaves that can lengthen the table, or shorten it depending upon who is in from college, which kid is out celebrating at a Bat Mitzvah, who has a school concert.  Sometimes we have ten of us, other times thirty.  The table grows or shrinks depending upon circumstance.
